Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Selects Companions

Watercolor painting - CompanionsAfter 17 difficult days in the cardiac unit of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, our first son finally came home. We also battled for our second son’s life for 23 days in Denver where he was treated at Swedish Hospital and Children’s Hospital. And our third son spent two days in the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.

Although all three of our sons experienced traumatic births, each one enjoys health today. But I know the tears and pain of the mothers, pacing the hospital halls because with each son’s birth, I, too, had to walk through the path of suffering.

My painting entitled, Companions, joins the public collection at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Woman in Red

Watercolor painting - LivingThe American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement and Natalie Ruggeri’s willingness to appear in my paintings inspired my Woman in Red series to be exhibited at ArtPrize 2010.

In this series, I illustrate light. By contrasting light against shadows, I endeavor to communicate hope in adversity.

For Natalie, heart disease cast a shadow until doctors healed her. Through color, form, and light, each stroke within my artwork carries the potential to light the human heart.

The Sky Walk Gallery at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin turned down my proposal to add one of my paintings to their collection because this hospital only accepts children’s artwork. Their art therapist explained that studies show children respond positively to the artwork created by other children. Then she added, “But we really love your paintings.” And she invited me to exhibit in the hospital’s Sky Walk Gallery.

The Art Cart at C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital

Watercolor painting - EscapeThe Children’s Hospital of Ann Arbor, Michigan added Pamela Alderman’s artwork to their art cart, or better known as the beloved art cart.

Two or three times a week, a volunteer pushes the art cart around the 200 rooms of the hospital. The art cart is loaded with artwork by various artists. For the duration of their hospitalization, children can personalize their rooms by selecting paintings.

The colorful paintings beautify the rooms and give the children a sense of ownership. This Gift of the Arts program not only promotes a healing environment, but the artwork also helps the children to reflect on something other than their illness. When the volunteers knock on the door, the children’s faces brighten as the beloved art cart enters their room.

Children of the Russian Arctic Note Card Gift Set

Watercolor painting - Laughing in the WindLaughing in the Wind

Watercolor on paper

Imagine the sound of children laughing in the wind.

Pamela recently finished painting a series of Russian orphan children, entitled Children of the Russian Arctic. The children depicted in the series have lived through difficult situations, stifling their laughter. Some of them have lost both parents. However, many have parents who are still living, but they carry the label “social orphans” because of their parents’ alcohol abuse or other serious circumstances.

Russian Ministries has invited Pamela help send these orphans to summer camp where they’ll play games, learn to swim, and watch puppet shows that introduce them to Jesus.

One artist may not be able to change the plight of four to five million homeless children throughout Russia and the Ukraine. But through the sale of her artwork, Pamela believes some children can be reached with a message of hope, igniting laughter once again.

Help send orphaned children from Russian or the Ukraine to summer camp.Purchase hand-signed, frameable note cards or reproduction prints, and Watercolor by Pamela will donate proceeds to Russian Ministries to help brighten the summer of an orphan child.

In honor of my mother-in-law, Mary, for her dedication to her children

The Children’s Hospital of Denver usually only accepts regional artist; however, they selected my painting, entitled Companions, because several years ago they treated our son, John. And they said that they really liked my artwork.

Inspired to Paint

Watercolor painting - Primary SimplicityMy friend said that her autistic grandson crawled up onto her bed, positioned his face about 12 inches from my painting, and silently stared at it for several minutes. As my friend painted this verbal picture, I felt inspire to paint some more.
