Like a Child

When I walked into John’s room, I found him still in his bunk bed, his face buried. After our alarm clocks went off, I had gone to check on our 11-year-old son to make sure he was getting ready for school. Frustrated, I chided John, “Hurry up, it’s time for breakfast.”

“Mom,” he gently responded, “I’m praying.”

A couple of weeks earlier, I had bought him a Bible devotional for children called, Jesus Wants All of Me. I wanted to teach John how to cultivate the habit of spending time alone with Jesus every morning. After giving him the book, I suggested that he read the daily Bible entry and conclude by talking to Jesus. That morning without any additional coaching, I found John doing exactly that.

While eating breakfast, I asked John what he prayed that morning. He said, “That I would be blameless.”

Later after he left for school, I went into his room and peeked at his journal reading for the day. It read, “May your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless.”1
