An Unexpected Ending

Watercolor painting - Stormy Skies BreakingWhen the storm hits your life, where do you turn for hope?

When I read about Lori’s journey through suffering, her words echoed the message that I tried to convey in my painting, entitled, Stormy Skies Breaking. The following excerpt gives an honest peek into Lori’s bitter struggle, but her story takes a surprising turn.

A Blessing in the Storm
By guest writer Lori Laws

I was diagnosed with a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy. What I initially viewed as a curse has been a blessing in disguise! No, I am not saying that Muscular Dystrophy is a blessing, but it is definitely a blessing how God used something so terrible to turn my life around.

Here is a brief excerpt from my ebook, A Blessing in the Storm…MD messed up my life and made me whole:

I believe with all my heart that my disease was not a curse, but the only way God could get my attention. It slowed me down and gave me the chance I needed to pay attention. Until adult-onset Muscular Dystrophy, I was not the least bit interested in God. Religion happened long ago, and I couldn’t see how it was relevant to me, living in the here and now.

Initially, I felt as if God forgot about me.

“Why, God, why me?”

Ironically, it has been through circumstances beyond my control that I turned to Him. We all face struggles in life that are like that. But in my life, I can now step back and see that it was a severe mercy.

We know that ALL things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose.1

God says all things work together—not select things. This is one of the first promises from the Bible that I memorized, and it’s a promise I always lean on whenever my life doesn’t make sense. I know for sure that God, not me, knows what’s best.

God has a purpose in your pain and suffering, otherwise it wouldn’t have happened. Until a person can surrender totally to His purpose, God cannot mold the suffering into anything good. Amazingly, I have discovered that I wouldn’t trade anything for this treasure of suffering. It’s priceless.
