Letter to an Expectant Daughter
My dearest Mary,
I felt so honored when you asked, “Mom, what books would you suggest that I read as I prepare for motherhood.” Thanks for the encouragement.
While standing in front of my bookcase, I asked, “Lord, please show me which books to choose.” Amazingly, my fingers grabbed a couple of my oldest books. As I reviewed the pages that I had earmarked or underlined years ago, I thought maybe I should reread those books for the sake of your two younger brothers.
Although I have learned many lessons on parenting from those books, the Bible, and especially the book of Proverbs, really helped shape my thinking. Over the years, I have often read a chapter in the book of Proverbs, corresponding with the calendar (Proverbs 1 on January 1, etc).
As I highlighted important sections in Proverbs, I developed my own little reference system. For example when I discovered a section on how we should speak to others, I drew a little symbol of lips in the margin. The book of Proverbs helped unravel many of the dilemmas in parenting.
Asking for wisdom
At your brothers’ school, several teachers complimented your dad and me, asking, “What is the secret to your parenting?” With tears, I answered, “I try to start each day on my knees.” Without asking Jesus for daily wisdom, I would utterly fail.
I have made so many mistakes in the last 24 years as a mother. Sometimes I got impatient, lost my temper, and spoke unkind words. Other times like a control freak, I expected everyone to obey me, including your dad. Yikes. Or I allowed pride to take over, and I caught myself gloating, “Look what I’ve done in the lives of my children.” And I stole the credit away from God.
While raising you and your three brothers, I began learning how to go to God for help. And He always provided some way for me to find the answers. By the way, you are in for quite an adventure.
Much love, Mom
By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder…But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.

EXCELLENT POST….number one I love Proverbs and 2… the one paragraph above described myself to a tee. Getting impatient, unkind words. Just lets me know that my wanting to read proverbs is a prompting from the Holy Spirit.
