Art for Honor is thrilled to feature Jeron Hendricks, a retired veteran who has lived a long and fulfilling life filled with creativity. At 78 years old, he has been married to his wife, Pat, for 56 years and is the proud father and grandfather of three sons, nine grandchildren, two great-grandkids. Jeron served in the Army from 1965 to 1967. He underwent basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and further training in Fort Polk, Louisiana, before being deployed to Vietnam. In Vietnam, Jeron was a part of a unit that provided aid to other units in need. He served as a radio operator and was also appointed as a chaplain’s assistant, but he got injured before completing his training.
Despite the challenges he faced, Jeron remains proud of his service and the sacrifices he made for his country. After his time in the military, Jeron struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), nightmares, and depression. He also suffered from various illnesses and injuries, including malaria, scorpion bites, a tripped bungee trap, and exposure to Agent Orange. To cope with these challenges, Jeron turned to painting as a therapeutic outlet. He discovered a passion for painting-by-number kits, which he found relaxing and rewarding. Jeron has since painted many pieces, including an eagle, The Last Supper, and the Washington Monument. Painting has given Jeron a sense of purpose and a way to express himself creatively. Despite the challenges he has faced, Jeron remains positive and grateful for his life. He cherishes his family and the memories they have created together. He is a true inspiration and a reminder that it is never too late to discover new passions and find joy in life.
