SUSHI THE CAT

SHOWING RESPECT TO OTHERS

“Ella kisses me.

         She hugs me.

She pats me from head to tail.

But I don’t like to be kissed. I don’t like to be hugged.

No one ever patted me from head to tail at the Tokyo Rescue-Me-Center.”

Sushi the Cat, by author and artist Pamela Alderman, addresses respect and friendship. In the book, children will enjoy the delightful antics of Ella and her cat, Sushi, as they learn how to get along with each other. By highlighting the importance of understanding, sharing, and companionship, Sushi the Cat teaches young readers and listeners how to treat others. When we show honor and respect to others, we open the way to make new friends.

INSPIRATION

Sushi the Cat was inspired while Pamela worked for her church as a conversational English teacher in Japan, where she met her husband, Leon. Thirty years later, Pamela traveled to Japan again and experienced the extraordinary kindness and respect of the Japanese people. These gracious encounters inspired Pamela to share those values through Sushi the Cat.

BOOK REVIEWS

Pamela Alderman is both the author and the illustrator, making this book unique. Her free spirit comes through in the narrative about relationships, the earth-tone watercolor images, and the Japanese calligraphy incorporated into the text. Sushi the Cat helps to broaden kids’ horizons and give them a better understanding of other cultures.

The tale of a cat’s move from resistance to reciprocity becomes the foundational bedtime story on which to build lessons and conversations about mutual respect. Time, persistence, and cataloging what one loves are also adoptable measures for parents, kids, and fastidious pets like Sushi.
